Plaza Semanggi
Yes, the American Idols plague has reached Indonesia! Please welcome Indonesian Idols. This popular event is always being held in one of our mall called the Plaza Semanggi and shown in our local TV station, RCTI (Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia).

Shoes anyone?
I saw this shoes display when I was at the flea markets in Blok M.
Quite creative, don't you think?

Dishes and Laundry Racks
Most people use racks like these to dry their clothes and dishes. They come in various sizes and designs to fit small and large houses. We usually put them in our back yard or in an open attic for houses without a back yard. Dishwashers and sophisticated washing machines are considered a luxury as they still cost a fortune.
Speaking of laundry, Antigua Guatemala Daily Photo posted an interesting picture on public laundry. I think it's a good facility. Wish we had the same thing here to avoid the unfortunate ones do their laundry in dirty rivers. Thursday, July 27, 2006
Keep Bargaining!
Not only at flea markets, but you can bargain here as well. This is ITC Fatmawati. Unlike the large fancy malls, this shopping area has very reasonable prices. You can also get a special price for buying things in bulk. This place has one floor full of people selling cellular phones.Wednesday, July 26, 2006
Another Flea Market
Ok, they were looking curiously at me and my camera :)
Look, there's a tukang rujak on the right side just like the one posted by sLesTa.Tuesday, July 25, 2006
Flea Market
Oh, yes you're right. That pink watch is soooo cute! :)
This flea market is located behind Melawai Plaza and close to the Blok M bus terminal, which I have posted a while back.Monday, July 24, 2006
Melawai 1
I am now going to show you pictures from around the Melawai Plaza area. This place is famous for the gold shops, clothings, fake branded handbags, etc. The key here is to act like you don't need the stuff and bargain hard! :)Sunday, July 23, 2006

TVRI
This is TVRI tower (Televisi Republik Indonesia), the oldest TV station in Indonesia. From 1962-1989 we had only one tv station. And If I remembered it correctly, it was on air only from 4:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Now we have 11 active private tv stations and cables with worldwide channels.Friday, July 21, 2006
Tukang Koran
On my way home I saw this guy selling newspapers on the street (we call them Tukang Koran). Not that many people opened their windows to buy newspapers from him. We've been seeing people like him all our lives here in Jakarta that we somehow tend to ignore them. As soon as the light turned green, I drove away thinking that I should've bought a newspaper. My dad's illness (including the huge hospital bill!) has made me feel like the most unfortunate person on the face of the earth, but this sight tells me otherwise.
Please excuse the dashboard's shadow there, because I took the shot from inside my car.Thursday, July 20, 2006
Pondok Indah Hospital
Thank you for all your concerns and wishes on the recent earthquake, tsunami and particularly for my father's health. His condition is gradually improving, although the chance to recover from liver cancer is very little, at least he's now home with us. This is Pondok Indah Hospital, where he stayed in. Rumah Sakit = Hospital.
Look here for more pictures of the hospital.Wednesday, July 19, 2006
EARTHQUAKE PANIC
it was nearly 6PM and i was still in the office, facing my computer, trying to finish my work. suddenly, i felt my monitor started to shake. within split seconds, i knew that i was just experiencing an earthquake. just as everyone else in my floor, who suddenly stood up from their chairs and started running to the doors.
following the recent earthquake in the southern shore of western java, the earthquake has now travelled to the northern part, hitting jakarta and the surrounding areas. of course, it created a small chaos and i had to take the emergency stairs 15 floors down to get to the street level where people has started to form in groups with panic in their faces.
no damaged has reportedly happened on today's earthquake, but it sure created panic. it was reported that the earthquake was at 6.5 richter scale, though the origin was quite far so that it didn't create any serious damage, thanks God! the picture above was taken right after i got off to the street level of my office building, which located in downtown jakarta. people started to make some phone calls and security officers were clearing the area on the emergency exit and stopped the elevator.
let's all pray that no further earthquake or any tragedy will happen in indonesia, as we have shed enough tears.Tuesday, July 18, 2006
Rujak Buah
along the streets of jakarta, you would find a lot of street vendors with different products to sell. this picture here shows a vendor who sells "rujak buah" or "fruit rojak". 'rujak' (or more familiar as "rojak" in malay) is a delicacy of different fruits to be combined with special dressings usually made of brown sugar, chili paste and tamarind (sometimes with a bit of fish paste and vinegar). the fruits come in different variety of tropical fruits, such as mangoes, roseapples (jambu air), jicamas (bengkuang), star fruits, cucumbers, pineapples, etc.
i myself is actually a big fan and everyday i would ask the tea lady in my office to go and buy me a plate of this rujak with just sliced of young green mangoes in it. i just can't have enough of it, as it is refreshing in the hot humid day, like jakarta.
my condolences also to the victims of the recent tsunami & earthquake attacks in pangandaran area. my heart goes out to the victims and the family. also to shanti's dad who just came out of the hospital. may he gets well soon!Tsunami in Pangandaran
Nature had its way once again :(
I did not feel the earthquake in Jakarta. My deepest condolences to the tsunami victims around Pangandaran area. I couldn't post any picture today as I'm currently taking care of my father who just came out of the hospital. But slesta will treat you with her wonderful picture :) thanks slesta!

Outside JCC
This is just outside the convention center. Those cars were lining up to get inside. It wasn't raining that day and not too hot either, so beats me why that lady in green was using her umbrella :)Sunday, July 16, 2006
Crowded Nokia Booth
Not a Nokia commercial here, folks :) Just showing you how crowded it was inside the Cellular exhibition at JCC.Saturday, July 15, 2006
Exhibition at Jakarta Convention Center
Jakarta Convention Center regularly shows various kinds of exhibitions including crafts, furnitures, computers, cellulars, properties, etc. This building is also often used for music concerts or graduation events. I went there recently to check out the 2006 Cellular show.Friday, July 14, 2006
Janur
Remember the yellow flag I posted a while back? Well, here's another yellow thing called 'Janur'. This is usually put up as a sign, in front of where a wedding ceremony, graduation, store opening or other big events take place. It's made of coconut leaves. Thursday, July 13, 2006
Teeth Expert??
Yep, that's what the sign says...Ahli Gigi = Teeth Expert. These signs always crack me up! :)
You'd find many 'Ahli Gigi' around Jakarta that will help mend your teeth. They're not certified doctors, but they won't pull out your teeth or anything like that. They just make affordable false teeth and simple braces. Leave the rest to your dentist!Wednesday, July 12, 2006
Ayam (Chicken)
There is still a tradition of chicken fight competition. We call it Adu Ayam or Sabung Ayam. It is considered a hobby and cultural event, although there are some people who use this tradition as gambling, and bet their money on the roosters. Tuesday, July 11, 2006
Burung Dalam Sangkar
This is for Anne (Manila DP) who on my previous post asked for the bird picture. Here you go, Anne ;)
Burung dalam sangkar = Birds in a cage.
There are quite a number of people in Jakarta who like to have birds as their pets.
I personally love them fly free in the sky.
I've been having so much fun with Daily Photo that only today I realized this was my 108th post! From my first post, I didn't think I'd make it this far :)Monday, July 10, 2006
Toko Burung 1
Now, this is the bird stalls (toko burung). Located right after the fruit stalls, on the same side of Barito street.Sunday, July 09, 2006
Fruits
I love how this Ibu's dress adds color to the fruits she sells. When you go to Barito's fruit stalls, you can ask them to arrange fruit gift in baskets. You pick the fruits, they pack them for you. It's common for people to bring fruit basket gifts when visiting someone in a hospital. They usually stop by these stalls on their way to the hospital.Saturday, July 08, 2006
Toko Buah Barito
Across the street not too far from Mahakam is Barito street. There are fruit stalls (toko buah) along this road. And bird stalls as well, which I will post later.Friday, July 07, 2006
Kura-kura
This boy was fascinated by the tiny turtles (kura-kura).
To keep up with all the Daily Photo experts out there, I've been playing around with layouts and picture size on this blog. Please bare with me, as things will change here and there a few times until I get it right. Edwin (KL Daily Photo), thanks for your help (I might ask you more questions!) :) Thursday, July 06, 2006
Toko Ikan
You will find toko ikan (fish stalls) just behind the toko bunga (flower shops) on the same Mahakam street. They sell fish in tanks, not those for food. Here you can also find turtles and snakes.Wednesday, July 05, 2006
Condolences Flower
In the midst of Jakarta's anniversary celebration, I found this flower arrangement. We say Turut Berduka Cita to express our condolences. This one must be prepared for a funeral.Tuesday, July 04, 2006
Toko Bunga 1
Toko bunga (flower shops) along the Mahakam street in south Jakarta decorated their stalls to celebrate the anniversary.Monday, July 03, 2006
Ondel-ondel
Firstly, my apologies for the late announcement of Jakarta's Anniversary, which was on the 22nd of June. Life's been too crazy for me lately :(
Jakarta is now 479 years old. What you see in the picture is Ondel-ondel, a giant puppet mascot from Betawi (local Jakartans) which is used on Betawi's marriage ceremonies or Jakarta's anniversary festivals. Every year we have the special event called Jakarta Fair, which has bazaar, traditional dance performances, Betawi's traditional food, fireworks, and other Jakarta related things.Sunday, July 02, 2006
Downtown Jakarta
here's downtown jakarta and its skyline. the empty street is known as "sudirman street", which was empty when i took the picture, because it was a holiday. it's usually crowded, especially during rush hours. one thing noticeable when you take picture of jakarta is that you would hardly get blue sky. it's probably due to the pollution in the air or whatnot, but it's one rarity to find as the sky is usually cloudy and in grey-ish color.

DP Theme: Supermarket
Hero supermarket has been around forever as far as I know. It was founded in 1971 and has been providing good services to its customers ever since. There are many new supermarkets nowadays, but Hero seems to be strong enough to keep up with the challenges. And they now have hundreds of outlets throughout Indonesia.
Today is a theme day for Daily Photo blogs.
The numbered links below will take you to different cities with the same theme. Please do visit them and see the supermarkets in their cities :)
